"Ritual" Exhibition

TEAM stands for "Tokyo Wonder Site: Emerging Artists on Mezzanine".
Since 2000, Tokyo Wonder Site has been cooperating with a network of galleries and art institutions to support emerging young artists. Every year TEAM is behind three to five exhibitions of young artists at TWS Hongo and TWS Shibuya.
"Ritual" is an exhibition of work by Mamoru Tsukada, Satoshi Ono and Masaya Chiba, who have been the focus of increasing attention recently. Tsukada has been the subject of much critical acclaim for his "Specter" exhibition held in 2006, an installation which showed both the front and back of masks, made while he was on a residency in India. Ono has developed the "Prism Violet" works for which he was well received at the New York Armory Show this year, and in this exhibition he presents new painting, drawing and installation works. Chiba will be adding new works every Monday night to her series of 18 works "Stories of Famous Trees".
While this exhibition has been titled "Ritual", a word suggesting religious ritual, this is not what the work on display is about. These three artists each create multi-layered worlds out of the profound nothingness in the banality of the everyday world, through a process of ritual artmaking that allows us to come into contact with the invisible phenomena of the world. Ritual is not a formalistic entity, but an action that has to be made if we are to come into contact with our gods and ancestors.
