Bruce Conner
Bruce Conner passed away at his home in San Francisco on July 7th at the age of 74. A contemporary of artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Conner produced assemblages using ready-made devices, household appliances and waste articles. He is also known as a pioneer of avant-garde film who experimented with a method of collecting and reusing ready-made materials for experimental films. His innovation was not in using "found object" but rather "found footage" that had been collected, crafted and edited into an entirely new work using discarded fragments of films. This radical practice has had a significant influence on film, and the found-footage genre has now been disseminated everywhere.
Conner's second solo exhibition in Japan will attempt to give a broad overview of Conner's various achievements within a limited exhibition space, showcasing a wide variety of works ranging from his early assemblage pieces to photographs, collages, drawings, prints and videos, offering a round of "applause" to this influential figure.
