Gyre Gallery
(This event will be held in 2 venues)

UTRECHT and PAPERBACK are pleased to announce the launch of ZINE’S MATE, TOKYO ART BOOK FAIR 2009, the first book fair specializing in artists’ publications to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

This year a major new artists’ book fair will open in London, New York’s Art Book Fair will open for it’s 4th year and new bookshops specializing in small-press will continue to prosper in cities across Europe, the USA and Asia. With artists’ book publishing, independent publishing of zines and art books on the increase the world over, ZINE’S MATE responds on behalf of Japan’s capital city, home to a plethora of independent publishers, sophisticated book shops, savvy book enthusiasts and artists.

ZINE’S MATE TOKYO 2009 will take place in July at EYE of GYRE and Vacant. Gathered will be artists and publishers from Japan and around the world, who practice book-making in progressive and distinctive ways.

Besides the booths filled with attractive artists’ books, there will be special exhibitions and events held at the gallery and at various sites within the GYRE building.

One of the missions of the fair is to present self-published works by artists, who are lesser known and regional. By providing free booths for them, ZINE’S MATE hopes to aid the emergence of luminous minds, whose unique and rich visions burst from the most modest of mediums.

ZINE’S MATE will be the leading fair for Japan’s artists’ book culture. With annual presentations, ZINE’S MATE will create opportunities for exhibitors and visitors to experience the ever-evolving world of zines and artists’ books. Despite their position on the edges of the publishing industry, these publications are essential to the forward moving of publishing and culture in general, a breeding ground for new ideas and forms of expression.
