After completing an MA at Joshibi University of Art and Design, Chikako Hasegawa (born 1970 in Niigata) started the "GIFT" series of artworks (meaning "poison" in German) in 2000. Taking poison and poisoning incidents that occurred during various eras and in a variety of countries as her theme, Hasegawa attempts to visualize the repellent aspects of poison, the risk it entails, and the beauty it possesses.
Hasegawa was selected to be a Researcher by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2002. She later studied in England from 2006 to 2008 as a fellowship student, participating in the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists. During her stay in London, she completed an MA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, University of London in 2008, and now lives and works in Tokyo.
This exhibition, her first solo show since her return to Japan, focuses on holes, a significant medium which connects us to the "other side". Hasegawa attempts to draw out the physiological dimension of holes through her paintings. This is her first exhibition at Radi-um after her solo exhibition with us in 2005.
