Located deep in a corner at the side of an old building facing the street, and occupying a high-ceilinged space in the basement, is Taro Nasu Gallery. Although it is situated in a location that is relatively connected to the city, the gallery is at the same time constrained to the margins of the district, as if it were existing in a completely different world to the street out in front.
This tucked-away space is typically flooded in constant, uniform white light. During the summer holidays in August, however, the light has been erased; the space ought to be under a veil of darkness. I designed the space for this exhibition thinking that this darkness represented another face of Taro Nasu.
At the height of summer, imagining what would emerge out of this warm, damp darkness, deep in a crevice of the Higashi Kanda area where Taro Nasu is located: plants, for instance, going about their hidden evolutions. Slowly swelling up and growing plump at the bottom of a basement pool filled with darkness, where gravity has lost its potency. Vines and creepers that receive what little light there is, helping to illuminate one another. (Jun Aoki)
This exhibition by Jun Aoki showcases 3D "plant" works based on this concept, as well as a tripartite series of 2D pieces. It is his second experiment in exhibiting his own creations in a gallery space he designed himself, following from his previous solo exhibition "Taronasubambi" at Taro Nasu Osaka, as well as a part of the Architect Tokyo 2009 project.
