The Brothers Quay produce work where the fantasy aesthetics that grew out of Central Europe at the start of the 20th century intersect with contemporary illumination, creating a form of artificial beauty that transcends time and has led them to be referred to as “video alchemists.” The popularity of current art and animation is often attributed to those who have been captivated by the world they created. To accompany the exhibition currently hosted at The Shoto Museum of Art, which introduces the creative world of these identical twins, from their early illustration work to their stage design for animations, video works and theatrical works that have hereto been seen rarely in Japan, Theater Image Forum will present a screening retrospective that includes previously unreleased works.
