Togyu Okumura
To commemorate the 55th anniversary of the Yamatane Museum of Art, the museum will hold an exhibition of the Japanese painter Togyu Okumura (1889-1990) with work from their collection. Yamazaki Taneji (1893-1983), the founder of the museum, collected Okumura’s work while interacting directly with painters of his time based on his belief that “painting is character”. He had a particularly close relationship with Okumura, and from the early days of his career told him that “I only buy paintings by people I am sure have potential.” Today, the museum is known for its outstanding collection of 135 works by Okumura.

At the age of 16, he entered the art school of Hanko Kajita (1870-1917) and met Kokei Kobayashi (1883-1957), whom he considered his lifelong teacher. He was a late bloomer, winning his first prize at the In-Ten exhibition at the age of 38. Throughout his life, Okumura maintained the emphasis on sketching and painting that he had learned from Kajita and Kobayashi, and produced many works that embodied his own words, “What is conveyed through painting is the humanity of the artist”.

This exhibition traces the history of Okumura’s painting career, focusing on his representative works such as “Naruto,” which depicts the whirlpools of Naruto in the Seto Inland Sea, “Joshin” and “Daigo,” which he created in memory of Kajita, as well as works that were exhibited at the In-Ten Exhibition, where he was active.
