Ngadi Smart
Born in Sierra Leone, West Africa, Ngadi Smart is a visual artist based in London and Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. In addition to illustration, photography, and design, she also works in mixed media such as collage.

In her illustrations, she questions the definitions of “normal,” “beautiful,” and “right” by focusing on identity, racism, feminism, and gender to express the voices of the vulnerable. She has also published photographic works on the themes of customs, subcultures, and relationships. In recent years, she has also been interested in documenting sensuality and culture from the perspective of an African.

As an invited artist for Kyotographie 2021, Smart will collaborate with Demachi Masugata Shopping Street, one of the local shopping streets in Kyoto, to create and present a new collage work that echoes old photographs of various events in the shopping street and contemporary photographs of the shopping street.

This exhibition is a part of Kyotographie Kyoto International Photography Festival 2021.
