In commemoration of the fact that Machi Tawara, one of Japan’s foremost contemporary poets, won the highest award in the tanka poetry world this year, Edit and Art Gallery will present the exhibition “Machi Tawara- #One and Only ‘Like’ and Size of the Future from Salad Anniversary”.
In this exhibition, about 300 poems have been carefully selected from over 30 years of Tawara’s poetry work, and combined with private letters, experimental paintings, and a vast amount of documents, the exhibition is like wandering through a forest of Tawara’s words.
The title of the exhibition is derived from a social networking site post made by Machi Tawara on July 6, 2020. The tweet, which asked people not to compete for the number of “likes” on social networking sites, but to create for the sake of a single “like,” garnered more than 180,000 “likes” and attracted the sympathy of many people.
This exhibition will highlight the essence of Tawara’s unchanging creativity, from her debut novel “Salad Anniversary,” which sold 2.8 million copies and shook Japanese society as soon as it was published, to her latest collection “Size of the Future,” which includes social poems such as about the COVID-19 pandemic and won the Chokusho Award.
Tawara has published six books of poetry, written numerous essays, translated classics into modern Japanese, translated foreign picture books, written plays, novels, and lyrics, and has expanded the possibilities of language and refined the expression of tanka.
