Chimei Hamada
Chimei Hamada (1917-2018) was a printmaker and sculptor that represented postwar Japan. Having gained popularity with “Elegy for a New Conscript” series, based on his own harsh war experience, he then did not only focus on the society as a motif but gradually started including motifs like human beings or the “self” as well, and so presented prints diverse in character. The expression of bitterly ironic humor even while facing the realities of the era that is seen in his works, was highly appraised both in Japan and abroad, and has influenced many contemporary Japanese printmakers. Hamada started creating sculptures from 1983 and his last print was made in 2000; but his desire for creation never ceased.
Chigasaki City Museum of Art has received a donation of approximately 60 of Hamada’s prints created between the 1950s and 1980s in 2002, including prints from the “Elegy for a New Conscript” series. This exhibition will become the first opportunity to share a big part of that collection with our visitors. Furthermore, works based on Hamada’s stay in Europe and works created after the 1990s, which were borrowed from the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama, will also make part of the exhibition in order to trace the artist’s creative path. In an uneasy time that is today, Hamada’s works invite us to reflect on various things.
