Ihei Kimura and Ken Domon

Artists

Ihei Kimura, Ken Domon
Ihei Kimura (1901-1974) and Ken Domon (1909-1990) are both known as pioneers of modern photographic realism in Japan. However, their personalities and styles were fundamentally very different. While Kimura used a small Leica and captured people and landscapes from spontaneous angles in a casual and fluid manner, Domon established his own style with a photographic process that seemed to stare at the subject thoroughly, down to the smallest detail, producing works filled with a sense of tension. This exhibition commemorates the 120th anniversary of Kimura's birth in 2021. It is hoped that visitors will feel the rich individuality of each photographer's work and the atmosphere of the times in which they lived.
