Tsuguharu Foujita

Throughout his life, Tsuguharu Foujita painted children with great affection. After returning to Japan in 1933 via Central and South America, Foujita subsequently traveled to China and other parts of Japan. Based on his interviews in China, his work vividly depicts children going about their daily lives. In the mural "Akita's Events," expressive children appear in scenes from each of the four seasons.

After the war, Foujita was forced to flee Japan for France, and he faced the city of Paris with special emotion. After settling in Montparnasse, Paris, Fujita painted groups of children gathered on corners of the city and indoors, and around 1959, he produced a series of oil paintings depicting Parisian street vendors as children. These small square oil paintings decorated the walls of the residence where Foujita lived with his wife.

This exhibition will focus on his oil paintings from the 1950s depicting children and his board painting "Little Craftsmen," which decorated his living space, along with works from the 1930s in which children appear.
