Yuya Hashizume has attracted attention with his "eyewater" series, which depicts the moment a single tear drops from an eye against a background of monochromatic ground. In recent years, he has focused on paintings with acrylics and has held exhibitions in Shanghai, Taiwan, Seoul, and other Asian cities, receiving favorable reviews.
In “Eyewater," which is characterized by its depiction of faces, the central facial expression is painted in a certain tone to celebrate universality. In an attempt to deepen the appeal of his works by changing other elements in various ways, Hashizume has created a series of work such as “Eyewater Animal," in which a figure holds an animal.
Yuya Hashizume's work is rooted in two sources of inspiration. One is the question of how originality can be born in today's society, where many things of the same quality exist and are experienced by many people, and where such things play an important role in society. The second question is what kind of imagination people can have about the future in a time when the future is technologically more predictable than ever before and the importance of diverse values is being discussed and recognized.
The artist himself does not assign specific meaning to the individual crying figures and says that he wants viewers to interpret them freely. Why are the painted figures shedding tears? The charm of Yuya Hashizume's works is that viewers can freely imagine the story before and after the moment of depiction, and project their own stories onto the work.
This exhibition will be the largest solo exhibition of Yuya Hashizume's work to be held in Tokyo. In addition to presenting the results of his recent “Eyewater" series, Hashizume will also present a balloon work, his first attempt at balloon art.
