Artists

Marie Laurencin
A prominent figure in the School of Paris, Marie Laurencin is celebrated for her depictions of women in delicate colours and soft outlines. Also known for her relationship with the poet Guillaume Apollinaire, she established an independent presence as a woman artist in the Parisian avant-garde. The exhibition follows her development from Cubist-influenced early works to the softer palette of her mature style. It explores the close relationships between women in the salon of American writer Natalie Barney, reflected in Marie`s early illustrations for The Songs of Bilitis. It also considers her connections within Parisian society during the Roaring Twenties and her stage designs for Les Biches, a production by the Ballets Russes, which brought together leading avant-garde artists. Portraits of Suzanne Moreau, who supported Marie Laurencin in her later years, and illustrations for the poems of Sappho reveal the utopia she found in communities of women and her feminin viison she developed within them.
