Andrew Wyeth
Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) was one of the leading figures of 20th century American representational painting. At a time when Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop Art were gaining prominence in postwar America, Wyeth remained apart from these movements, continuing instead to paint familiar people and landscapes. Rather than simply depicting visible reality, these works reflect an intimate inner world. Through deeply personal subjects, Wyeth created images with a quiet universality that continues to resonate with viewers.
Windows, doors, and other threshold-like motifs appear throughout Wyeth's paintings. While boundaries have long been a recurring theme in Western art, they also became a way of expressing connection to a deeply personal world and the threshold between inner and outer experience. Focusing on these expressions of the boundary, this exhibition explores the distinctive world of Andrew Wyeth.
