Art Deco is a decorative style that swept the world, especially in the 1920s. This style, which extended to all aspects of lifestyle design, also appeared in "mode," or fashionable clothing. Dresses produced by leading Parisian fashion houses such as Poiret, Lanvin, and Chanel are dotted with geometric, linear designs and intricate decorations that are characteristic of Art Deco. It was a new, contemporary style that was popular among active, free-spirited women who were free from old conventions.

The year 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of the Art Deco Exposition, an exposition of decorative arts held in Paris. To mark this anniversary, the Kyoto Costume Institute (KCI), which boasts a world-class Collection of clothing, will exhibit approximately 60 selected clothing pieces from its collection. In addition, paintings, prints, crafts, and other items from art museums both in Japan and abroad will be included to unravel the fashion of 100 years ago, which continues to influence the present day.
