“Arte Popular” - The Creative and Critical Power of Latin Americans

National Museum of Ethnology
Finished
An exhibition of Latin American folk art, bursting with color and form. In Latin America, refined handicrafts made by the people are known as popular art (Arte Popular in Spanish). From Mexico in the north to Argentina in the south, the exhibition features approximately 400 works of popular art ranging from relics of ancient civilizations to works of contemporary art collectives, mostly from the collection of the National Museum of Ethnology.

The special exhibition will explore the question of why Latin American popular art is so diverse. The exhibition seeks to answer this question by focusing on three main points: the history of cultural intermingling since the time of Columbus, the process of artistic refinement, and the critical spirit of contemporary creators.
