Artists of Shunyo-kai - Celebrating Its 100th Anniversary

Nagano Prefectural Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Ryusei Kishida, Kazumasa Nakagawa, Shikanosuke Oka
The Shunyo-kai (Spring Sun Society) was established in 1922 (Taisho 11) by members including Hoan Kosugi, Kanae Yamamoto, and Morita Tsunetomo, who had withdrawn from the Saikoin Exhibition Western Painting Department, as well as members led by Ryusei Kishida of the Sodokai. It emerged as the third major group representing the Western-style painting community. Under the free and open atmosphere that respected the individuality of each artist, not only oil paintings but also prints, ink paintings, sketches, and newspaper illustrations were exhibited without distinction of genre. Furthermore, they expanded their artistic activities nationwide to foster the next generation, laying the foundation for the continued Shun'yō-kai exhibitions. In this exhibition, we will introduce approximately 200 works from the pioneering period adorned by renowned artists indispensable to the history of modern Japanese art, up until the late 1900s. Note: During the exhibition period, displayed works may be replaced.
