Asami Kobayashi’s earlier work was primarily figurative, depicting subjects that could be clearly grasped when standing in front of a painting. Recent works, however, introduce a distinctive decorative quality.
Limited color palettes are arranged with a strong sense of order. Rather than simply repeating abstract geometric forms, the paintings create a living rhythm through their forms. Colors and shapes are arranged horizontally and vertically in different combinations, introducing something between the recognition of reality and the act of looking itself.
As the eye moves across the surface, images connect seamlessly, forming fresh silhouettes. Precise forms are repeated throughout each composition, creating a rhythmic, almost patterned quality. What began as depictions of the world seen through wire mesh has gradually evolved into increasingly abstract and decorative imagery. Through contrasts of color and playful forms, the work captures a deeper sense of abstraction within everyday reality.
As this visual language continues to develop, space, time, decoration and even chance become part of a growing vocabulary. An unusual yet deeply felt intuition seems to propel the work forward. This exhibition draws attention to the distinctive decorative rhythms emerging from this evolving practice.
