Assemble, Matter at hand
‘Building Blue’ explores the transformation of landscape through colour, and into colour. The gallery becomes a playable testing ground for a new pigment made from industrial and agricultural residues in Japan: rice husks from koshhikari cultivation, dust from a limestone fertiliser, recycled glass and copper transformed through heating to produce a vibrant blue. This blue, based on cuprorivaite, a compound found in the first synthetic pigment created by humans, has the unusual characteristic of forming as intensely coloured solids, which can be crushed and ground to produce paint, or used like a ceramic, to create objects made of pure colour. A landscape of climbable mini-buildings made of painted Japanese Cedar, solid blue objects and raw materials reveals the materiality of the colour and possibilities for its use. ‘Building Blue’ explores the creation and use of colour as a means of prompting new understandings of our environment and the development of more resourceful ways of building for the future.
