Perception often begins at the surface, where texture, gloss, reflection or wear shape how an object first appears.
This exhibition takes that condition as its point of departure, approaching surface not as finish or decoration, but as something that mediates how objects are seen, read and understood. Bringing together practices working between art and design, the exhibition considers surface as a condition of perception. It can reveal or conceal, preserve or distort, register time or simulate something other than what lies beneath. Rather than separating appearance from material, the exhibition explores how the two are inseparable. Surface can also be considered as a record. Marks of use, treatments, coatings, reflections or manufactured textures carry traces of labor, transformation and time. Surface does not simply cover matter; it stores processes and produces meaning. Finishing is not separate from material, but part of how material is articulated through process, repetition and use. This relates to semiotic ideas of the trace or index, where signs emerge through contact, action or residue, while also responding to contemporary critiques of the polished, frictionless surface as an aesthetic ideal. Surface can therefore be understood not as boundary, but as threshold, a point of exchange between object and observer, material and image, structure and fiction.
These questions extend into the exhibition architecture itself, where surface becomes spatial condition as much as object quality. Together, the works position surface as an active condition through which material and perception are continuously negotiated.
