Hokusai Katsushika
In November 1976, a small art museum opened in the town of Nokitabe. The museum was named the Hokusai Museum after the renowned artist Hokusai Katsushika and has become a symbol of the town of Obuse, which is now known as "Obuse, the town of chestnuts, Hokusai, and flowers.

It is said that Hokusai first visited Obuse in 1842. Hokusai visited his pupil Takai Kozan, a wealthy merchant in Obuse, who was dressed like a craftsman in traditional Japanese clothing and linen-lined sandals. Kozan warmly welcomed Hokusai and later established a studio called Hekiiken to support his creative activities. In this ideal environment, Hokusai is said to have created many paintings in Obuse, including the ceiling paintings of festival stalls in Higashimachi and Kamimachi. Since its opening, the Hokusai Museum has increased its collection of paintings year by year. Among them, the masterpiece from the last years of Hokusai's life, "Fuji Koshi Ryu (Dragon Over Fuji)," was acquired by Kozan after Hokusai's death, then moved from one place to another, and was bought back from overseas by the Hokusai Museum. It is a gem of a work that may be considered a reflection of Hokusai himself from the majestic Fuji and the dragon running up to it. In addition to the original paintings, the Hokusai Museum collection also includes works such as "Fugaku Sanjurokkei (Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji)" and "Hokusai Manga," which are regarded as treasures by the world today.

This exhibition introduces a collection of masterpieces from the Hokusai Museum's collection of paintings, prints, and printed books.
