Ayaïro’s solo exhibition, Beauty of the In-Between, will open at Contemporary Tokyo on November 28. The exhibition presents new works created with the scenery of Ginza as a new subject. Having previously painted scenes drawn from her own memories and childhood, Ayaïro began painting Ginza, a city with which she has almost no personal memories. Through this process, she came to wonder whether what she was truly painting was not the scenery itself, but rather the sensation that arises when she is drawn to something.
Ginza is a city associated with widely shared images of luxury, sophistication, and commerce. Through encounters with the city, she sometimes finds herself struck by a strange sensation emerging through glass, light, buildings, and other elements. It is a sensation in which something seems to be present, yet remains elusive; something that gives rise to an indefinable quality that cannot be fully captured in words, and whose nature seems to shift from one moment to another. Does this sensation arise from the things themselves, as they exist before her, or from the way she perceives and remembers them? In this exhibition, she gives the name “Beauty of the In-Between” to these sensations that unsettle her perception, and explores their contours. Through the familiar scenery of a city known to many, the exhibition explores what she is drawn to, presenting a body of work that emerged from this inquiry.
