Katsuya Susuki Gallery presents Echo, the second solo exhibition by Ayano Sakurai at the gallery, opening September 26, 2026.
An echo is a sound reflected from mountains or valleys that returns after a delay. The phenomenon evokes distance between where a sound is produced and where it returns, the invisible expanse of space and the strange cycle of something sent out coming back in an unexpected form.
The word also suggests presences and folklore associated with mountains, evoking an ambiguous world where something seems to exist without ever becoming fully visible. Sakurai has developed a distinctive practice based on subtle discomforts in everyday life and the imagination that emerges from them.
Taking echo as a point of departure, the exhibition moves across boundaries between inside and outside, self and other, and reality and imagination, giving form to unseen presences and sensations that resist language.
