Flower and bird paintings have long been a popular subject for art. During the Edo period, when artists like Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) were active, flower and bird prints were incorporated into ukiyo-e woodblock prints and were produced in great numbers. The Rhode Island School of Design and Museum (RISD), an American art university founded in 1877, houses a large collection of Japanese art, including ukiyo-e prints. Among these, the collection of bird-and-flower prints donated by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, wife of businessman John D. Rockefeller Jr., is known as a valuable collection of exceptional quality and quantity. The Rockefeller Collection was first exhibited in Japan in 1990 at the "Rockefeller Ukiyo-e Collection Exhibition: Reviving Beauty - Flowers and Birds." This exhibition is a newly planned exhibition, 35 years later. This exhibition features 163 carefully selected flower and bird prints by ukiyo-e artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige, chosen from approximately 700 works in the collection.
