Captivated by Detail - Edo and Meiji Era Craft to Contemporary Art

Yokosuka Museum of Art
Until Jun 23
Yokohama, which served as a port and foreign settlement, was a major production center for ceramics during the Meiji period. The intricate craftsmanship and designs of "Yokohama-yaki," represented by Shinkashiki ware, astonished people in Europe and America, garnering tremendous acclaim. Additionally, in Yokohama, a fusion of Western furniture and meticulous carvings of dragons, pine, bamboo, plum, and phoenixes resulted in export-oriented carved furniture. In recent years, there has been renewed attention to the expression of Yokohama-yaki, as well as to the rare carved furniture that is hardly left in Japan.

Despite changing times, works characterized by outstanding craftsmanship, strong individuality, and artistic expression have continued to enchant people. In modern times, they have produced paintings and sculptures with realistic and powerful expressions derived from the West. From the Meiji era to the early Showa period, oil paintings by intense artists such as Yuichi Takahashi, Ryusei Kishida, and Michinari Kono can be considered prime examples.

Moreover, even today, remarkable attempts by contemporary artists who push the boundaries of their expressions can be observed. Here, in the context of contemporary art, will be exhibited paintings and three-dimensional works using various materials. This exhibition aims to introduce selected works from a wide range of genres, including "Edo-Meiji crafts," "modern painting and sculpture," and "contemporary art," with the keyword of meticulous expression from modern to contemporary Japan, allowing the viewer to appreciate the diversity of expression.
