Chinese Students at Tokyo University of the Arts: From Hu Gentian to the Present

This exhibition is the third installment of the Chinese Students at Tokyo University of the Arts project, following an exhibition in the 2024 academic year and a concert in the 2025 academic year. The story begins with a single self-portrait preserved at the University Art Museum. It depicts Hu Gentian, who came from Guangzhou, China, to the Tokyo Fine Arts School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1915. Through the Self-Portrait he painted as his graduation work at the age of 27, along with materials from his student days, the exhibition traces his experience in Japan and, after returning home, his involvement in founding the Guangzhou Municipal School of Fine Arts--China's first public art school--and his role in laying the foundation for modern art education in southern China.
A digital archive presented on a large screen visualizes information about Chinese students, including their years of study, places of origin, fields of study, and personal connections. Chinese students currently enrolled at the university and its alumni, as well as artists who studied there in the 1990s, also participate, presenting works that reveal how exchanges established in the past continue into the present. More than a century ago, young people crossed the sea in pursuit of their dreams. By tracing their footsteps, the exhibition passes on to the future the role Tokyo University of the Arts has played in art education and cultural exchange between Japan and China, and across East Asia.
