Modern circus is thought to have emerged in eighteenth-century Europe and arrived in Japan toward the end of the Edo period. Since then, it has continued to captivate audiences across generations.
The color, excitement and sense of escape created by traveling performers, together with the sadness and hardship often hidden behind the spectacle, have long inspired artists. Circuses and clowns appear throughout both Western and Japanese art. Bringing together works from modern Europe and Japan, this exhibition looks at what artists have found so compelling about the circus.
