Dynamo: Energy, Transformation, and Motion

Standing Pine (Tokyo/Nagoya) and Chi-Wen Gallery (Taipei) are pleased to announce Dynamo, a group exhibition supported by Mori Yu Gallery (Kyoto), bringing together five artists from Taiwan, Japan, and Switzerland: 2ENTER, Chuang Pei-Xin, Betha Sarasin, Pe Lang, and Masayuki Kawai. This exhibition marks an ongoing collaboration between Standing Pine and Chi-Wen Gallery, following their joint presentation at Art Collaboration Kyoto (ACK 2023).
The exhibition takes its name from a device that turns movement into electricity, and each work explores ideas of energy, change, and motion-sometimes through technology, sometimes through the body, and sometimes through shifts in light or sound. Rather than presenting art as something finished or fixed, the exhibition brings together works shaped by ideas of change and transformation. Some pieces, such as generative or kinetic works, evolve in real time or respond to their environment, while others capture a moment or trace a process influenced by ongoing forces. Across the exhibition, each artist approaches the concept of transformation differently-whether through shifting light, digital systems, or the body itself-creating a space where the energy of change, both visible and underlying, connects the works and resonates throughout the show.
Within the exhibition, analog and electronic processes converge in works like “Crystallization, 1–9” and “Video Feedback Configuration No.12 Generator Cuboid Mirrored Display 1.” These pieces, by Masayuki Kawai, generate unpredictable, ever-evolving visuals through analog video feedback and electronic circuitry. Rather than relying on digital programming, they harness the “infinite flow of returning electrons” to create living systems of constant movement and transformation.
Subtlety and flux take center stage in the kinetic sculptures of Pe Lang. In works such as “LED n6” and “LED n23”, slow-moving film and shifting light produce delicate, perpetually changing patterns. These sculptures invite viewers to slow down and observe the transient interplay of light, color, and form, emphasizing the beauty found in impermanence and the passage of time.
Generative multimedia finds expression in “Spiralprojekt 1983–2024”, a project by Betha Sarasin and developed with musician Markus Ganz and the Fraunhofer Institute, that animates three-dimensional spirals and music in real time. Conceived in the 1980s and realized with today’s technology, the work uses algorithms to create endless variations, embodying the exhibition’s embrace of continuous creation and infinite change.
Digital information flows are visualized in 2ENTER’s “Virtual Lineage Taiwan” and “Data-Verse U # Calendar.” The former reconstructs the history of Taiwan’s internet infrastructure through artificial intelligence, revealing how digital memory is shaped and sometimes lost. The latter transforms the traditional calendar into a living artifact, updating daily with real- time data from the internet.
Transformation of the body into digital form is explored in “The Method of Entry” by Chuang Pei-Xin. By scanning the artist’s own body into a virtual model, the work examines what is gained and lost in becoming digital, raising questions about presence, absence, and the new possibilities that emerge when physical energy is converted into virtual potential.
The exhibition invites viewers to consider how various forms of energy-electronic, digital, physical, and conceptual-flow through each work. The selected artists are united by their engagement with movement, transformation, and the ongoing process of creation, encouraging audiences to appreciate both the finished works and the dynamic forces that shape them.
Dynamo offers a platform for reflecting on how art mirrors a world in flux, where technology, memory, and the body are continually transformed. The exhibition positions art as an active participant in the circulation of energy and ideas.
