This lecture explores how social change shaped everyday life in the 20th century through two Soviet animated films. As revolution, agricultural collectivization, war and migration to cities transformed the way people lived, how did everyday customs and beliefs survive? The lecture approaches this question through familiar examples, from folk beliefs in rural communities to New Year traditions.

The second half focuses on The House of Kuzya (1984) and Yuri Norstein’s Tale of Tales (1979). Through a house spirit inhabiting a city apartment, lullabies passed down through generations and the separations brought about by war, the lecture explores how animation and sound capture ways of life that have vanished, as well as cultural traditions that persist by taking on new forms.
