Artists

Feiyi Wen, Peng Ke
This exhibition introduces new works by Feiyi Wen and Peng Ke, both artists of Chinese origin who have gained attention for their pioneering works. Both artists were born and raised in China during the remarkable economic growth of the 1990s. They later studied abroad and embarked on their careers as artists. While both are engaged in photography-based activities, they explore various media and techniques, expanding the scope of their expression.

Feiyi Wen, currently based in London, obtained her doctoral degree from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2020. While working as a digitizer at the British Library, she developed her photographic series, combining images she captured with found photos, often focusing on nature and landscapes. Wen is interested in the relationship between the images reflected in her photographs and the ones viewers intend to see. For example, while some of her photographs evoke traditional Chinese landscape paintings or appear to be taken in Japan, most of her recent works are shot in England and Wales. Through her photography, Wen has been experimenting with exposure levels, development techniques, and paper and printing methods. The exhibition will feature 16 pieces from her latest series, "Seeing a Pine Tree from Your Bedroom Window," presented as gelatin silver prints on rice paper.

Peng, after graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2015, spent several years in California before dividing her time between China and North America. She has long been interested in the culture and history produced collectively in populous urban areas during Asia's modernization process. Through her creations, Peng examines the enthusiasm, despair, resilience, and daily life associated with rapid development in the region. In 2022, Peng presented an assemblage titled "Bay Windows," depicting the living spaces of migrant workers and the "Urban Villages" where many of them reside, at the Tai Kwun Contemporary. The decorative windows, mimicking an exotic aesthetic, evoke their lives, inner aspects, dreams, and failures. For this exhibition, Peng will unveil seven new works, which serve as a sequel to this series.

Both artists offer thoughtful perspectives on contemporary circumstances. Wen contemplates natural forms deeply, while Peng ambiguously embraces the symbols and types representing social differences. Wen's seemingly serene and natural images are meticulously curated and edited, whereas Peng projects a romantic and warm gaze onto the artificial and homogeneous aspects of modern urban life.

For this exhibition, both artists will present significant new works marking transitions in their practice. Through a dialogue that connects the practices of these two artists, the exhibition introduces artists representing a new generation in the Chinese contemporary art scene.
