Henri Matisse – Forms in Freedom

The National Art Center, Tokyo
Until May 27

Artists

Henri Matisse
Henri Matisse (1869-1954), one of the greatest masters of the 20th century, spent the latter half of his life in Nice, southern France, where he energetically created works using kirigami, a technique of cutting out variously colored papers with scissors, and pioneered new artistic expression.

With the full cooperation of the Matisse Museum in Nice, France, which boasts an important collection of paper cutouts, this exhibition introduces approximately 150 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, and textiles, with a focus on Matisse's paper cutouts. This is an extremely rare opportunity to see Matisse's monumental expression.

(*This exhibition was originally scheduled to be held in 2021, but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic)
