Artists

Isamu Wakabayashi, Mayumi Terada
This collection exhibition presents solo displays dedicated to Isamu Wakabayashi and Mayumi Terada, featuring works primarily from the Nerima Art Museum Collection.

Isamu Wakabayashi "Run and Rest"
Isamu Wakabayashi (1936–2003) was one of Japan's most influential contemporary sculptors, acclaimed both in Japan and internationally. Working primarily with iron, Wakabayashi explored themes of nature, time and space through abstract forms. In 2024, the museum received a major donation of 70 works, including the sculpture Run and Rest (1996), the print GRASS (1993) and a series of drawings. As the museum's first acquisition of Wakabayashi's work, the exhibition introduces these newly acquired pieces while highlighting the artist's practice across sculpture, printmaking and drawing.

Mayumi Terada "Presence in Absence"
This exhibition surveys the work of New York–based artist Mayumi Terada (b. 1958), who was born in Nerima. Terada is known for creating meticulously crafted scale models of interior spaces and photographing them to resemble real rooms, resulting in quietly contemplative images. While earlier works are predominantly monochrome, more recent photographs introduce subtle color, and the practice has recently expanded to include stone sculpture. Featuring early sculptures, photographs alongside their models and recent sculptures, the exhibition offers a broad overview of Terada's artistic career and marks the first solo exhibition at the museum in 16 years.
