Koji Fukiya
Koji Fukiya (1898-1979) was born in Niigata Prefecture and moved to Tokyo in 1913 to pursue a career as a Japanese-style painter. However, after being introduced to Shojo magazines by Yumeji Takehisa, he quickly became a popular figure of his time as an illustrator. In 1925, he went to Paris to study art seriously, gaining confidence as a painter through Salon acceptances and solo exhibitions. However, he had to return to Japan in 1929 for financial reasons. He resumed working for Shojo magazines and reached the peak of his popularity in the 1930s with his modern depictions of women. These women, dressed in fashionable attire and possessing strong gazes, became iconic symbols for many women aspiring to a modern lifestyle. After the war, Fukiya expanded his horizons by illustrating fairy tales and picture books, and working in animation, moving away from his Shojo magazine work. In his later years, he continued to captivate audiences with exhibitions showcasing his delicate depictions of young girls. He passed away at the age of 80 in 1979. In 1987, a memorial museum dedicated to him opened in Shibata City, Niigata Prefecture, where he spent his childhood, and it continues to be loved by many visitors.

This exhibition brings together approximately 500 works, including original illustrations for Shojo magazine covers and inserts, works from his Paris period, original illustrations for fairy tales and picture books, and animation drawings, providing a comprehensive retrospective of Fukiya's artistic career spanning about 60 years. The hope is that visitors will appreciate the significant role Fukiya played in the publishing world during the Taisho and pre-war Showa periods, when culture and art became more accessible to the masses, as well as his contributions to post-war children's culture.
