Ma Yanhong was born in Baoji, Shaanxi Province, China, in 1977. After attending the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts, she graduated from the Oil Painting Department at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2002. As a member of ”N12,“ a cutting-edge art group formed in 2003, she has been active as an artist primarily based in Beijing. Since the end of 2020, she has relocated her creative base and life to Yokohama, where she continues to work today. This is her second solo exhibition in Japan, following her exhibition held in Tokyo in 2024. Even while active in China, Ma was influenced by Japanese counterculture, such as anime. However, since moving to Japan, she has had the opportunity to experience that culture directly and in earnest. Among the things that particularly captivated her was the natural presence of photographic portraits of people—in various sizes and expressions—embedded within everyday landscapes. This exhibition introduces Ma‘s painting practice, focusing on new works featuring human figures as motifs, alongside past pieces.
