Kunio Makino
We were born in (1925) in 1925 of the previous year changed an era by Showa, and Kunio Makino who sank in (1986) in 1986 was right "painter who lived in the times called Showa". We enter (1943), Tokyo Bijutsu school (existing Tokyo art University) oil painting department in 1943 and receive instruction from Usaburo Ihara, Soutarou Yasui, but we are summoned in (1945) May for 20 years and return to school in the next year. We hold private exhibition and continue announcing without belonging to specific picture groups after having graduated in (1948) for 23 years. Earnest individual collector bought work of Makino who was unrelated to doctoral painting circles for life whenever they held private exhibition without being stored almost in art museum, and most have been treasured. Makino who continued exploring creation that loved and respected Rembrandt whom we had a crush on in the days of boy for life, and took classic realism technique seriously. This exhibition is exhibition which memorialized birth 100 years of Makino from the second retrospective show held in 2013 after time of 12 years. Mainly on work which collectors treasure, we look back on painting of Makino who ran through the Showa era and ask about significance of the work in the times of Reiwa. We did not care about modernism, and in a sense Kunio Makino was person who continued describing naively for life. Painter spirit of such him is summoned, and, in the times of this Reiwa, painter of Showa revives.
