George Hoyningen-Huene
George Hoyningen-Huene (1900-1968) is renowned as a pioneering photographer who expressed the interconnection of art, fashion, and film through his photographs. In collaboration with the George Hoyningen-Huene Estate Archives, Chanel Nexus Hall presents the first solo exhibition in Japan, "Master of Elegant Simplicity: George Hoyningen-Huene," starting in February 2024. The exhibition showcases approximately 65 works, including representative fashion photographs by Hoyningen-Huene, pieces narrating his association with Chanel, and portraits of celebrities and landscapes from his travels during the transformative period in society.

Gabrielle Chanel and George Hoyningen-Huene first met in early 1920s Paris, where creativity flourished across various fields. Hoyningen-Huene, having spent his childhood in St. Petersburg and London, settled in Paris in 1920. After receiving lessons from Cubist painter André Lhote, he contributed sketches for his sister's fashion house. Recognized by Vogue magazine for his talent, Hoyningen-Huene became involved in creating backgrounds and sets for photography. Around 1926, he began taking photographs himself and swiftly became the chief photographer for Vogue Paris.

Masterfully manipulating studio lighting, he captured the three-dimensional silhouette of models and accentuated the luxurious texture of fabrics. His works, inspired by great architects and painters across different eras, incorporated elements of Art Deco, Neoclassicism, and Baroque styles, showcasing dramatic expressions. As one of the first photographers to bring elements like movement and the natural demeanor of models to haute couture photography, he approached each model as an individual, stating, "The model is a woman, not a plaster cast."

Hoyningen-Huene formed close bonds with companions such as Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Christian Bérard, and Serge Lifar, not only during his time at Vogue but also after moving to Harper's Bazaar. He continued capturing Chanel's looks and expanded beyond the realm of fashion, creating portraits of Hollywood stars. Additionally, he embarked on extended journeys to Africa, Greece, the Levant region on the eastern Mediterranean coast, and Mexico, producing five photo books. His photographs depicting breathtaking landscapes and unpretentious portraits of people he encountered narrate his love for adventure and the spirit of humanism.

This exhibition, celebrating the connection between two figures emblematic of 20th-century style, marks the first extensive display of Hoyningen-Huene's works in Japan.
