Masterpieces of the Hosomi Museum in Kyoto: Rinpa, Jakuchu, and the Fascination of Japanese Art

Shizuoka City Museum of Art
Finished
The collection of the Hosomi Museum in Kyoto, amassed over nearly 80 years by three generations of the Hosomi family starting with the industrialist Ryo Hosomi (the first generation of Kokaan), has been highly acclaimed domestically and internationally as a comprehensive collection of Japanese art history.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Hosomi Museum, this exhibition carefully selects and showcases 104 masterpieces, including 8 Important Cultural Properties, from the museum's approximately 1000 high-quality collection items. These treasures span various periods and genres, from archaeological artifacts of the Kofun period to Buddhist and Shinto art of the Heian and Kamakura periods, ink paintings of the Muromachi period, tea kettles of the tea ceremony, cloisonné decorations of the Momoyama period, tea ceramics, genre paintings of the Edo period, hand-painted ukiyo-e prints, and the enduringly popular Rinpa and Jakuchu schools of art from the modern era.
