The Matsumoto Architecture + Art Festival will be held again this year under the concept of "Winter in Matsumoto, where art lives in famous buildings." For 23 days, 20 famous buildings in Matsumoto will be used as venues to exhibit works by a variety of artists. The festival was launched last year by local volunteers, and over the 23 days of the festival, more than 65,000 people visited the event.
There are many historically significant buildings in the center of Matsumoto, such as warehouse buildings dating back to the Meiji period (1868-1912) and store-and-home buildings from the Taisho and Showa periods (1926-1989). However, with the changing times, the number of vacant buildings has been increasing, and many of them are in danger of being demolished. This art festival was started in the hope that many people will recognize the value of these unnamed "masterpieces" that shape the Matsumoto cityscape, and that this will lead to their preservation.
