The National Treasure: The Tale of Genji Illustrated Scrolls is one of the most famous picture scrolls in Japan. It is the oldest surviving example of a painting of "The Tale of Genji", and beautifully depicts the world of the tale and the psychology of the characters in a serene and tranquil painting style. The lyrics written in elegant handwriting on beautifully decorated paper convey the lush atmosphere of a time close to that of the original story, and continue to fascinate viewers today. On the occasion of the museum's 90th anniversary, it will be exhibited for the first time in 10 years in Nagoya.
