Pride of Yokosuka: Exhibition of Souvenir Jacket Sukajan

Yokosuka Museum of Art
Finished
Sukajan were initially created as souvenir jackets for members of the American military. Over time they became synonymous with Yokosuka’s distinctive culture. The name sukajan is a combination of Yokosuka’s “suka” and “jan” from janpaa, a Japanese word for jacket.

The exhibition offers a comprehensive view of the fascinating sukajan. It also introduces Dobuita Street, the area in Yokosuka with rows of souvenir shops directed at the American military, through souvenirs, photographs, and other reference materials.
