An exhibition will be held to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the death of Rei Kamoi (1928-1985) (whose name is often spelt Rey Camoy/Camoi in accordance with his signature), who continued to express “What does it mean to be human?” After graduating from Kanazawa Vocational School of Arts and Crafts (present-day Kanazawa College of Art), Kamoi established his own painting style while touring various countries such as France, Brazil, Italy, and Spain. Interested in the connection between heart and heart in humans, he depicted dark aspects and weak aspects of the human heart through motifs of human figures, etc. This exhibition focuses on the motifs that were an important element in Kamoi’s production of artwork, and introduces Kamoi’s artistic image of figures, from self-portraits, drunkards, portraits of women, churches, etc. It also displays the original illustrations he was involved in for Biho-roku, Chugoku meigenshu [Well-known quotations in China], an essay by Chin Shunshin (Chen Sunchen) serialized in The Yomiuri Weekly from 1978-1980.
