Rika Noguchi
Rika Noguchi is known both in Japan and abroad for her unique point of view, which seems to move between the microscopic and macroscopic, her selection of subjects that touch on the mysteries of human nature, and her transparent colors and poetic photographic works. In her second solo exhibition at Taka Ishii Gallery, Noguchi will present her recent video work "Glowing Sea" and 14 new photographs taken in the dunes.

“Glowing Sea" (2021/2023) is a video work shot in 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, on the beach in Okinawa, where Noguchi lives. Noguchi records small events that occur on the beach while thinking about the other side of the ocean. With the pandemic making it difficult to travel, Noguchi's production activities have been greatly restricted, as she has encountered a variety of subjects through his travels. At the same time, however, these restrictions have unwaveringly strengthened Noguchi's will to enrich the world with the power of her imagination. Noguchi is quietly trying to discover the unknown world that exists within the familiar every day.

Noguchi's new work (2023), which captures people enjoying paragliding against a contrast of pale blue sky and sand dunes, was shot in the Tottori Sand Dunes. Wings made of a special chemical fiber catch the wind, and people who do not have the power to fly soar through the sky. During the flight, the legs are held out at an angle in preparation for landing, perhaps out of instinct, and the viewer can see the confusion of the sensation of a body that has never been experienced before. What is the gaze of the person who landed quietly on the ground and returned from the new world?

Noguchi describes this exhibition as an exhibition about “distance." Distance to the other side of the sea. The distance from here to the rainbow. People who seem to have arrived at another planet far away. In recent years, in addition to photography, Noguchi has also been involved in video, drawing, and sculpture.
