Rojō (lit. “on the street”) is the shared ground, where freedom and obstacles coexist. In the past, in Japan, there already existed a concept of such a free space called kugai, meaning “public realm”. This exhibition celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Rojō Kansatsu Gakkai (“Street Observation Society”), founded in 1986, and explores the art living on the streets (rojō), by introducing not only contemporary art and historical materials, but also playground equipment in parks, public bathhouses, and street performances. We invite you to come and experience this urban art, bustling with critique and humour.
