Saul Leiter
The past two exhibitions of Saul Leiter's work held at the Bunkamura the Museum have made the almost unknown photographer's name known to the Japanese public and generated such a strong response that the term "Saul Leiter-style photography" has become a household word.

In 2006, when Saul Leiter was in his 80s, he came back into the limelight with "Early Color," his first book of photographs published by Steidel, a German company that continues to fascinate photography fans around the world.

When Saul Leiter passed away in 2013, the majority of his work remained unorganized, but the Saul Leiter Foundation founded the following year, initiated the "Slide Project" to create a database of the archive. The number of color slides alone amounted to several tens of thousands, and it is said that more than ten years will be needed before the full picture of his achievements is revealed. Even after his death, Saul Leiter is still a "developing" artist who is constantly making discoveries.

This exhibition will present more than 400 works, including a large-scale color slide projection of newly discovered works, previously unseen black-and-white photographs, paintings, and other recent works, to reveal the true face of Saul Leiter, who has never been introduced to the public, and the source of his sense of color, which continues to astound the world, for which he is called the "pioneer of color photography. The exhibition will also explore the source of Saul Leiter's color sense, which continues to astonish the world.
