The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo opened in December 1952, and the fiscal year 2022 marks the museum's 70th anniversary. To commemorate this occasion, the museum will hold a splendid exhibition of paintings, sculptures, and crafts from the Meiji period onward, featuring only those works designated as Important Cultural Properties. However, this is not just an exhibition of masterpieces. Even works that are now highly acclaimed as "masterpieces" were "problematic works" at the time of their first release, as they established new expressions that had never been seen before. The exhibition also looks into the secrets of art history, such as how such works underwent changes in evaluation before being designated as Important Cultural Properties.

Because Important Cultural Properties are limited in terms of loan and exhibition for protection, this exhibition is a rare opportunity to view them all at once. Through these first-class works, visitors will rediscover the fascination of Japanese modern art.
