Seed-syllable Artisans

Ichigaya Letterpress Factory
Until Jun 2
During Japan's late Edo and early Meiji periods, letterpress printing, employing lead type, became a thriving industry alongside the Meiji Restoration. The intricate typefaces used in this method were originally crafted from "seed-syllables" by skilled artisans. These craftspeople meticulously carved the reversed characters onto wooden or lead bars, each about 3 millimeters in size, ensuring uniformity in size, thickness, and style. Despite their remarkable skills, many of these artisans remain unknown to history. This exhibition honors their legacy, exploring the art of seed-syllable, the foundation of Japanese typeface creation, and showcasing the typefaces of that era.
