Shinzan Kurihara
First presented this autumn at the Embassy of Japan in Belgium and in a solo exhibition at Art on Paper Brussels, “DAYS” by Shinzan Kurihara received an enthusiastic response. This exhibition marks the first presentation of the “DAYS series” in Japan. Each work in the series is created using only the Japanese character “日 (hi or nichi)”, meaning “day” or “sun.” Through subtle variations in calligraphic style, brushwork, and the bleeding of ink, Kurihara explores the fundamental yet deceptively simple character, capturing the individuality of each passing day. His works emerge from a meticulous process in which every condition is carefully considered: ink cultivated through long-term, precisely controlled temperature management; paper and water selected according to the desired expression; and even the seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity. Each repetition of “日” carries the quiet presence of a different moment in time. Even the days that pass unnoticed are irreplaceable, for no day ever returns in quite the same form. We invite you to experience “DAYS” by Shinzan Kurihara.

*In 2022, on the occasion of Art on Paper Brussels, one of Kurihara’s works was acquired by a prominent Belgian art collection fund. In 2026, the work was subsequently donated by the fund to Musée L · Musée universitaire de Louvain, where it is now part of the museum’s collection.
