Kichijoji Art MuseumThe theme of artist Shotaro Yoshino (b. 1979) is "memory of the land." In Japan and abroad, Yoshino traces the relationship between people and the land and creates large-scale installations and sculptures through dialogue with the memories that make the land what it is. He is also strongly conscious of the fact that soil itself contains memories, and he uses soil as a material for expression, as well as for installations around the world in which he lifts up the soil as a layer of memories and "stands" it on the ground.
Yoshino has visited various places as a visitor, found the memories of the land from a new perspective, and by carefully lifting them up, has embodied them in his works. In contrast, Kichijoji, the site of this exhibition, is a place that Yoshino has been familiar with and spent time in since his childhood, and in a sense, his own memories are part of Kichijoji. In the course of his research for this project, he met various people who pass through Kichijoji, including those who were born and raised there, those who have moved there, those who commute there, and those who happened to visit there, and came into contact with various memories that exist in Kichijoji.
This exhibition, a new development for Yoshino, consists of sculptures and installations of various sizes. Yoshino will create new memories on top of the countless memories that have accumulated in the land of Kichijoji and now make up the land that is "Kichijoji".
