Sonya Kuznetsova, also known as Welldonesonya, is an artist born in Moscow and currently based in Tokyo. After graduating from the Faculty of Animation and Computer Graphics at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography, she has worked for many years as an illustrator, concept artist, and art lead in the game industry.
Before moving to Japan, she was a co-founder of a game studio in Poland and an art lead on an indie game, managing a team of wonderful artists. After releasing the game, she moved to Tokyo to study the language and immerse herself in Japanese culture and the contemporary art scene.
Through conversations with the artists and creatives around her, learning about their backgrounds, their experiences, and their paths as artists, Sonya was inspired to create the series “PLAYFULNESS はどこ??”.
Many artists and creatives face burnout, as well as the loss of curiosity and playfulness in their practice. When drawing becomes a profession, you begin to take your own creativity very seriously. This responsibility, both toward yourself and toward your audience, can sometimes pin creativity to the floor. Many of us are connected by similar anxieties.
Out of a desire to find a new path toward creativity and lightness in self-expression, Welldonesonya decided to befriend this frustration and try to understand what it is about, what kind of signal it carries, and whether this “weakness” can become soil for growing something new and inspiring.
A character that appeared accidentally during the process of working on the series became an unexpected embodiment of the artist’s own search. Cupid, as a symbol of love, usually connects people’s hearts to create a beautiful and eternal story. But the Cupid from the series “PLAYFULNESS はどこ??” is a moth of another kind. It flies toward the warm light of the smoldering, anxious hearts of creators, helping them search for and connect with new sparks of inspiration.
While creating this series, Sonya found her own playground through experimenting with different materials: pastels, wax crayons, oil pastels, pencils, acrylic, digital graphics, risograph printing, ceramics, photography, and more. It was simply fun. “PLAYFULNESS はどこ??” presents the beginning of this journey and research. It is also an invitation to share experiences, doubts, and creative paths with one another.
